The Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute is a hub for the promotion of Chinese culture and was established with the support of the Chinese government and in partnership with the University of Manchester. Over the past 10 years, the Institute has continued to develop a programme of courses, cultural exchange and public events that showcase the vibrancy and diversity of China.

In March 2016 Halliday Meecham Architects were commissioned to refurbish a Grade II listed late Georgian property as a new home for the Institute. The design utilises a strong and simple theme of bold colours and geometric motifs that is reflected in furniture, fittings and finishes.

The principle spaces, teaching, learning, and tutorial have the benefit of high ceilings and sash windows. The Georgian detailing provides a backdrop for statement furniture and rich fabrics that acknowledges rather than imitates Chinese themes.
